April 2008 — "I'm well beyond the average age of young backpackers and those frequenting hostels but I really like the atmosphere and self-catering facilities of many hostels, particularly those popular with hikers...so the hostel at Castle Mountain was a delight. Termed a "wilderness" hostel, it is actually very close to the Trans-Canada Highway and was much less basic than I expected. No TV or internet facilities but the ambiance of the place more than made up for it - it has a great common area with large bay windows and window seats and a wood-burning fireplace in the middle of the room. Add to that a very cheerful and friendly manager and the breathtaking setting beneath Castle Mountain and this place is one of the nicest hostels I've stayed at. I might not try it in high season when 28 people would make it more than cozy but any other time, definitely! "

"None too basic wilderness hostel"

April 2008 — "On a recent visit to Lake Louise for two days of snowboarding I stayed at the Hostelling International wilderness hostel at Castle Mountain, which is half way between Lake Louise and Banff. It was about a 15-minute drive back to the hostel from the ski area and we arrived, without having booked, on a Friday evening. The very friendly and welcoming host explained that there was plenty of room in the 14-bed female dormitory, and sure enough we shared it with just three other women that night. The place was not what I expected for a wilderness hostel, it had a full kitchen with plenty of space for cooking and a comfortable lounge with a wood burning stove and views looking out to the trees. The host played music that was conducive to a relaxing atmosphere and he kindly pointed out to us that there was an osprey nesting on the nearby bridge, which we went to see and it was beautiful."
