"Quiet, Convenient and a Nice View!"

March 2010 — "When I travel between Alberta and BC, which I do often for business, I generally try to stay in a clean hotel near the main highway, but far enough away to be relatively quiet, and I do look for one with a complimentary breakfast and high-speed internet. I also do not want to pay high rates, so I look for well-known chain hotels. I love that some chain motels, notably Best Westerns and Holiday Inn Expresses, do not use bedspreads, those ugly, unhygienic thin, usually plaid things, and use a combination of sheets to keep you warm but clean as well. When we went to Golden and decided to spend the night, we decided on the Best Western Mountain because it was located just off the highway but a block toward the mountains and across from a restaurant, so that we could basically eat and sleep. We checked in, making sure we could have Wi-Fi and a complimentary breakfast, and the rate was reasonable for a king bed in a small town on the Trans Canada Highway, at $129.99. In my experience traveling along this highway, most of the chain hotels charge approximately this amount for a standard room, at least in the non-peak months. The front-desk employee was helpful, fast and efficient. The common areas were clean and relatively new looking. Our room was also clean, although the carpet and dreaded bedspread were old-looking. The bed was very comfortable and the linens and towels were nice. The bathroom was fairly large compared to many chain bathrooms, and the fixtures were clean and well-maintained. Although I was disappointed in the bedspread, the firm, relatively new bed was great and very comfortable. Our room faced the mountains, not the highway, so I hoped there would be very little traffic noise, but the railway nearby was a worry. We walked across the street to a decent restaurant, and then went to bed early. Happily, I heard only one train, and no traffic noise except for some drunks coming in early in the morning. The temperature in the room was perfect without having to adjust the thermostat, which can often be an issue. In the morning, we were decently rested, and had our room coffee. Unfortunately, the complimentary breakfast started at 7:30am, and we had to be on the road well before that. I was disappointed that it didn’t start earlier so that we could take advantage of this, so that would certainly be one issue I would like to see changed. Still, we had a good, quiet sleep, and were able to checkout easily and quickly and be back on the highway very early. Best Western Mountain in Golden, BC, is decently-priced, is clean and well maintained, is very conveniently located, has good customer service, and is quiet. I cannot speak of the complimentary breakfast, because it doesn’t open until 7:30am (at least on Saturdays), which was disappointing. I also would have liked to see a no-bedspread bed set up, but the king bed was firm and comfortable. I would recommend this hotel, and stay again when in the city. "
