December 2012 — "I stayed at the Fairmont Royal York having been summoned by my boss. The Royal York is truly the grand old dame of downtown hotels, solid as stone, right by Union Station, and so very convenient to the Billy Bishop Airport (Toronto Island) -- grab the free "blue bus" shuttle that runs in a loop between the hotel and the airport all day. My coworker and I checked in together after waiting a half-hour in line to reach the reception desk. The lobby was overrun by Beliebers and their Mommies, most wearing glitter somewhere on their person. Now, being caught in a flood of Beliebers is new for me, but I have to think that the hotel itself has experienced this before, if not with Justin Bieber, with some other star attraction performing near by. We actually left the lobby for two hours and came back (left our bags with Bell Desk where everyone was helpful and hustling) but when we returned the unbelievable Beliebers had formed an even longer line. My point is that the reception desk, while seemingly efficient and very friendly, did not appear to be as heavily manned as it could have been. Three humans were staring at screens in the Concierge desk which sits in the middle of the lobby -- probably doing good work, but all the while hundreds of us were waiting beside them wishing they were giving out keys at the other desk. Several of the stations at reception were empty all the time we were waiting. Although we checked in at the same time, my coworker was given a room on the second floor while I was given a free upgrade to the Royal York Gold level, their "80-room hotel within a hotel" with its own concierge and turn-down service and access to cocktails and breakfast. Was it free? I don't know. That was never made clear and the very small library on the 12th floor that housed only full a few tables was all full when I tried to get breakfast. I ordered room service which was NOT free -- $46 for two eggs, half a tomato, hash browns, yogurt and berries for one -- and which was NOT faster than the rest of the hotel, as far as I could tell. Yes, the corner of my bed cover was turned down when I returned to my room late at night. Yes, the bathroom door had two luxurious bath robes hanging on its back -- didn't try them as they are always too small for me. The bathroom had more vases and faux flowers and the lotions/shampoo were in slightly larger bottles. My bedside radio was a Bose. Otherwise, my room was identical to my coworker's room on the second floor. I had no opportunity to enjoy the free appies or cocktails or breakfast, but I didn't see enough to make me spend my own money on an upgrade if I should ever visit there again. But... I had my own elevator and only saw three or four Beliebers riding it with me. Bonus. "
