August 2007 — "Our family decided to explore an unfamiliar (to us) Alberta destination this year for part of our family camping holiday - the Cypress Hills region. We arrived on a Tuesday before a long-weekend with the plan to stay through the weekend and then carry onward. Our trip was was cut short by 2 nites as we just couldn't see the reason for staying.
The campgrounds in this area leave a lot to be desired. The campsites are extremely small and close together. After checking a few out (Elkwater, the first campground looks like a parking lot) we settled on Firerock as it seemed to provide the most privacy. We were awoken one night by the people in the site next to us blasting their t.v. with the windows open. By Friday, the long-weekend campers came in droves - the footprint on this campground was severe, with at least 2 groups per campsite in many. Which, leads to lots of noise and partying. We have nothing against a good time, but we really don't appreciate having to hear other people's music at a louder decible than our voices. Even after a complaint, which resulted in the conservation officer's telling them to turn down the music, the noise level was beyond reasonable. Eating lunch at our campsite with the booming bass of house music blasting next to us really wasn't appreciated either. It seems people really don't have a concept of noise levels; we could hear every word of the conversation next to us at 11:30 p.m. Ever heard of lowering your voice??
Truely, this isn't camping. It's bringing your home with you (music, beer, patio laterns and all) and thinking that everyone has the same taste in music as you.
I'll take the provincial parks in British Columbia or the Rocky Mountains any day over this area. If you go, 2 nights is more than enough. Fort Walsh is definately worth a visit (ironic how the main problem at the time of the history of the fort was alcohol - history seems to repeat itself). The bike paths, beach and lake are lovely, but other than that, there's not a lot to do.
If you're looking for a peaceful retreat in nature - go somewhere else!!!! This is definately not the place. I couldn't believe the lack of consideration for fellow-campers in this campground."
