July 2009 — "There are only a few campsites at Idlewilde. Maybe 10? It is just a couple of miles outside of Portal, in Southeastern Arizona. A branch of the famous Cave Creek runs along its edge, and the campground is surrounded by huge canyon walls that glow yellow and pink In the sun. There is a pit toilet and a pump for water. I was the only one staying there, so it was very peaceful and extremely convenient for birdwatching. However, as far as security goes, my spot was easy picking for people or animals, but absolutely no unpleasantness occurred. As the sites are shaded, it would probably be possible to sleep in an extra hour before the temperature in the tent became unbearable. I really don’t know for sure because I was up at 6:00 with the birds. This is a great place to see the Elegant Trogan, a rare and beautiful bird. I found it on the South Fork of Cave Creek, just a hop, skip and a jump from the campground. Sitting outside during the evening was possible, but required slathering Off on your skin, as there were very tiny, but persistent mosquitoes. During the day when it is hot, this was not much of a problem. (July) Temperatures here are bearable in the afternoon heat, as the area is at about 5000 feet above sea level. It is still pretty darn warm! Probably about 90 degrees or so, where down below it would be more like 100 degrees F. If you find yourself in this area, you can also check out Stewart and Sunny Flats campgrounds. All are quite beautiful in their own way, and only a short distance apart. (Except Rustler and Barfoot which are 10 miles up switchbacks on a narrow mountain road. Up there it is a very comfortable temperature, but in July, the rainy season, afternoon or evening rain or hail is very possible. "
